Digital transformation is reshaping the entire sector, from VR in museums to AI in architecture. With €275 million from the National Growth Fund, the Netherlands aims to become a leader in immersive experiences. The technology is also making waves in healthcare and training, from emergency response drills for police and firefighters to exposure therapy for patients.
Culture is not only an expression of who we are, it is also a powerful economic engine. Across Europe, the Cultural and Creative Sectors and Industries (CCSI) employ more people than the automotive industry. With 7.6 million workers, they make up over six percent of the EU workforce and are recognised by the European Commission as one of fourteen vital industrial ecosystems for the future.
In the Netherlands, these industries generate over €20 billion in added value and nearly 400,000 jobs — from Arts and Cultural Heritage (144,000) to Media and Entertainment (106,000) and Creative Business Services (146,000).
What makes the Dutch sector remarkable is its scale and self-reliance: together, it generates €6.3 billion in revenue, with cultural organisations earning nearly €2 billion of that themselves, alongside government and private funding. It shows how deeply culture is woven into both our economy and our everyday lives.
